Your Child’s First Dentist Visit: A Stress-Free Guide
Clinical Importance of Early Dental Exams
Did you know that 70% of dental anxiety in adults can be traced back to a single negative experience during childhood? At RJ Luxe Dental, we don't just 'check teeth'—we monitor critical jaw development milestones and early-stage skeletal growth. A child's first visit is a clinical necessity for healthy facial development and a lifetime of positive oral health associations.
When Should the First Visit Happen?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first visit by the age of one, or when the first tooth appears. Early visits allow us to monitor jaw development and catch potential issues before they become painful.
How to Prepare Your Child
Talk About It Positively: Avoid using words like "shot," "drill," or "pain." Instead, explain that the dentist is a "tooth fairy's helper" who will count and clean their teeth.
Read Books Together: There are many great children’s books about visiting the dentist. Reading these helps normalize the experience.
Role Play: Use a toothbrush to "count" your child's teeth at home, then let them count yours.
What Happens During the Visit?
Dr. Jayti Shah uses a "Tell-Show-Do" approach. We tell the child what we are going to do, show them the tool on their fingernail, and then do the procedure. The first visit is usually just a quick exam and a gentle cleaning, followed by a reward from our prize box!
