Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child first visit the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child visit the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth erupting.

Are dental X-rays safe for my child?

Yes. We use advanced digital X-rays that emit significantly lower radiation than traditional film. We also use lead aprons and prioritize safety to minimize any risk.

How can I prepare my child for their first visit?

Talk about the dentist positively, read books about visiting the dentist, and avoid using words like 'pain', 'shot', or 'drill'. We specialize in keeping the visit fun and stress-free.

How do I stop my child from thumb-sucking?

Thumb-sucking should ideally stop by age 3 to 4. Encourage positively, use distraction, and reward progress. If it persists beyond age 4, Dr. Jayti Shah can recommend a habit-breaking appliance.

When should my child start brushing their teeth?

Start cleaning gums with a soft damp cloth from birth. Once the first tooth appears, use a rice-grain size of fluoride toothpaste with a baby toothbrush. By age 3, use a pea-sized amount. Supervise brushing until age 7 to 8.

What are dental sealants and does my child need them?

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings on chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent cavities. They reduce cavities by up to 80 percent. Recommended when permanent molars come in, around ages 6 and 12.

My child has a toothache. What should I do?

Rinse with warm salt water, use floss to remove trapped food, apply a cold compress, and give age-appropriate pain relief. Do not apply aspirin to the gum. Contact RJ Luxe Dental for an urgent appointment.

Is it normal for baby teeth to have gaps?

Yes, gaps between baby teeth are a positive sign indicating enough space for larger permanent teeth. If baby teeth are tightly packed with no gaps, orthodontic evaluation may be needed for potential crowding.

What happens if a baby tooth is knocked out?

Knocked-out baby teeth should NOT be reimplanted as this can damage the developing permanent tooth. Clean the area gently, apply a cold compress, and visit Dr. Jayti Shah to check for injury to the permanent tooth bud.

How can I prevent cavities in my childrens teeth?

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, limit sugary snacks and drinks, avoid bed-time bottles with milk or juice, schedule regular 6-month dental visits, and consider dental sealants for molars.

At what age do children lose their baby teeth?

Children begin losing baby teeth around age 6, starting with lower front teeth. The process continues until age 12 to 13. If teeth are lost much earlier or later than expected, consult Dr. Jayti Shah.

Does my child need fluoride supplements?

Fluoride supplements are needed only if drinking water has low fluoride levels. In Ahmedabad, most municipal water has adequate fluoride. Dr. Jayti Shah will assess your childs needs and recommend supplements only if necessary.

Can children get orthodontic treatment?

Yes, early evaluation is recommended by age 7. Phase 1 treatment may begin between ages 7 to 10 to guide jaw growth. Full braces or aligners are typically placed once most permanent teeth erupt, around ages 11 to 14.
