How to Handle a Dental Emergency at Home
Emergency Triage: The First 60 Minutes
In a dental emergency, the first 60 minutes are often the 'Golden Hour' that determines whether a tooth can be successfully saved. Whether it’s an avulsed (knocked-out) tooth or acute pulpal pain, your immediate actions at home are critical to the clinical outcome. At RJ Luxe Dental, we prioritize emergency triage to ensure that patients in Ahmedabad receive immediate, specialist-led intervention when every second counts.
Common Emergencies and Immediate Steps
1. A Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Tooth This is a true "race against time."
What to do: Pick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing part), never the root. If it's dirty, rinse it gently with water. Try to place it back in the socket and bite down on a clean cloth.
If it won't go back in: Place the tooth in a small container of milk or your own saliva.
Action: Contact Dr. Jayti Shah immediately. A tooth has the best chance of being saved if replaced within 60 minutes.
2. Severe Toothache A persistent, sharp pain usually indicates an infection or deep cavity.
What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Use dental floss to ensure no food is trapped between the teeth.
Warning: Never place an aspirin tablet directly against the gums near the aching tooth, as this can cause a chemical burn on your tissue.
3. Cracked or Broken Tooth
What to do: Save any broken fragments. Rinse your mouth and the fragments with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to minimize swelling.
4. Lost Filling or Crown
What to do: If a crown falls off, try to keep it safe. You can use a tiny dab of toothpaste or over-the-counter dental cement to temporarily stick it back on to protect the sensitive inner tooth until you reach our clinic.
When to Head to the Clinic
If you experience heavy bleeding that doesn't stop after 15 minutes of pressure, or if you have swelling that makes it difficult to breathe or swallow, these are signs of a serious infection or trauma. RJ Luxe Dental is equipped with modern technology to handle these crises with precision and care.
